Opening the Election - Scoop launches Election Q website

Scoop is launching the Any Questions website for the 2017 election today. Any Questions is a Q & A website where New Zealanders can ask the questions of political parties in the lead up to the election. This is part
of our “Opening the Election” initiative. It’s an easy way to find out party positions and allows you to view candidates’ answers side by side. It’s
also a way for you to make your voice heard this election, and get the parties talking about the things that are
important to you.
If this sounds familiar, we have used the popular AskAway project from the 2014 election as the base of our website.
AskAway was part of the Design and Democracy Project at Massey University. Each week through till the election we will ask the spokespeople from each party for responses to
the most popular questions.

Seeded questions
To kick off the questions we will be posting some of our own questions that arose out of Scoop’s Making Housing Affordable HiveMind project. Our questions are about the issues where participants held a common view irrespective of the three broad opinion group
our study identified. Based on their answers to other questions these opinion groups were broadly described as
• pro-evidence & looking to the future
• free market
• state intervention

Questions in Te Reo
Yes please. Unfortunately we didn’t have the capacity to arrange a Māori language translation of the Any Questions
dialogue, but if you put your questions in te reo we will aim to get them addressed by the spokespeople.
