The war on public education over the last nine years has dramatically altered the face of schooling in New Zealand. The reforms are driven by a narrow focus on functional literacy and numeracy, skills acquisition for a low wage economy. After nine years of constant assault there should be genuine concern that another three years might just finish off public education as we have cherished it for generations. How might the Left respond in ways that are not just a nostalgic return to what once was? What are the alternatives beyond the aridity of the neo liberal assaults of the current government? How might we return to the idea that education is a national treasure to protect democracy?
Peter O’Connor is Professor of Education and Head of The School of Critical Studies in Education and Social Work at the University of Auckland. He has been a frequent critic of government reforms of state education. His research interests include creative pedagogies, arts based research and the link between the arts, education and social justice. Peter was formerly the Education Manager for the Race Relations Office and President of the Foundation for Peace Studies.
