The Election, Crime, Prison and the Merry-Go-Round

The Sensible Sentencing Trust was established in 2001 as a justice reform and Victims advocacy organisation.

Founded by Garth and Anne McVicar, SST pulled no punches. They said that New Zealand’s Justice System was defunct and the country had a criminal centred, offender friendly legal process that was simply recycling offenders on a never ending Merry-Go-Round.

McVicar said the welfare system was destroying peoples pride and will to work. He went on to say that the welfare system that was supposed to give people a hand-up had instead become a hand-out, and was the single biggest contributor to New Zealand’s crime and prison population.

“In 1961 95% of children were born to married couples and most of the fathers worked to support their family. However by 2015 only 53% of children were born to a traditional mother/father relationship and the crime rate increased in proportion to the demise of the family and the growth in welfare.”

“For Maori, sadly, the figures are worse. In 1968 the number of children born to married couples was 72% but by 2015 that figure had slipped to just 21%.”

“Crime increased exponentially, but once again in proportion to the demise of the family and the growth in welfare.”

McVicar said he was heartened by the recent article by Alan Duff showing conclusive evidence that the welfare system had caused incredible damage to New Zealand society, our families and the blow- out in crime and prison numbers.

The evidence is overwhelming, with an Election coming hopefully the politicians will listen.
