Refugee solidarity action at Aust High Commission

Refugee solidarity action in front of Australian High Commission

Amnesty International supporters will be standing in solidarity and joining hands outside the Australian High Commission in Wellington and the Consulate-General in Auckland on Wednesday 19 July to support the thousands of men, women and children being held in offshore detention on Nauru and Manus Island.

The action will mark the fourth anniversary since the Australian Government announced that no one arriving in Australia by boat and seeking asylum would ever settle in Australia.

With Manus due to be closed completely in October, and despite the recent settlement of a class action lawsuit against the Australian Government, people remain trapped in these open air prisons in conditions that amount to torture. These people have already lost so much and they deserve so much more – education, well-being, a safe place to call home and the chance to rebuild their lives. The centres must be closed and all people there brought to safety.

Amnesty International will hand over thousands of petition signatures to an official from the Australian High Commission in Wellington at 9am. Where: Australian Consulate-General, 186 Quay St, Auckland Australian High Commission, 72-76 Hobson Street, Wellington When: 7.50am – 8.30am, Wednesday 19 July 2017 Photo opportunity: 8:10am Petition Handover: 9am (Wellington only)
