The Migrant and Refugee Rights Campaign (MARRC) welcomes a recent apology from Green co-leader James Shaw, concerning
his call for a 1% immigration cap. Shaw apologised while speaking to the Federation of Multicultural Councils.
“It’s good to see a politician respond to criticism, and shift towards pro-migrant messaging,” says Wellington Central
candidate Gayaal Iddamalgoda.
“The call for a 1% immigration cap cloaked racist pandering under pseudo-scientific rhetoric, so we welcome this
apparent retraction.”
“We hope this shift in messaging remains consistent, and will continue to campaign for migrant and refugee rights.”
MARRC is holding a Migrant/Refugee Rights Election forum in Wellington’s 17 Tory St, on Saturday the 26th of August at
7pm. Wellington Central candidates will speak at the forum, which will be chaired by Doing Our Bit – Double The Quota
campaign spokesperson Murdoch Stephens.
