The Treasury appoints new Deputy Secretary
Treasury Secretary Gabriel Makhlouf has announced the appointment of Jon Grayson as the Treasury’s new Deputy Secretary, Financial & Commercial.

The Deputy Secretary, Financial & Commercial, is responsible for the New Zealand Debt Management Office, Export Credit Office, and Crown Balance sheet. As well as overseeing the Crown’s portfolio of commercial, and financial entities, Jon will lead the Treasury’s work on infrastructure and housing.
“This work is critical to our ability to raise living standards for New Zealanders and Jon’s extensive expertise in these areas made him a clear choice for the role," says Mr Makhlouf.
"We had a high calibre of applicants for the position and Jon’s appointment is testament to his experience and specialist knowledge. I look forward to him joining our Executive Leadership Team," says Mr Makhlouf.
Jon joins the Treasury from Australia where he has most recently held the role of Director-General, Department of the Premier and Cabinet with the Queensland Government. He previously had an investment banking career, and was CEO of an ASX listed infrastructure fund. With a strong background in capital markets and investment in major infrastructure assets, as well as major industry reforms, Jon’s senior executive career spans over 25 years in both public and private sectors.
Jon and his wife will be moving from Queensland to Wellington to take up the role. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) from the University of Queensland and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Jon takes up the role at the Treasury in early August 2017.

As Deputy Secretary, Financial & Commercial, Jon is responsible for Financial Operations, Commercial Operations, and the Infrastructure and Housing Group.
Originally from Australia, Jon has held senior executive roles within the public and private sectors spanning over 25 years. Most recently, Jon had responsibility for driving a major public sector reform programme as Director-General, Department of the Premier and Cabinet with the Queensland Government.
Jon has a strong background in capital markets and investment in major infrastructure assets. As Chief Executive of Prime Infrastructure, Jon led the acquisition of one of the world’s largest coal export terminals and the subsequent successful ASX listing of the investment fund. During his time as a senior executive of the Queensland Treasury Corporation, Jon was responsible for delivering the Suncorp-Metway merger and a major report to government on rail industry reform.
Throughout his career Jon has held a number of directorships including with the Australia and New Zealand School of Government and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, and was a member of the Brisbane G20 Steering Committee, and member of the Council of Australian Governments Senior Officials Group.
Jon holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Queensland, is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
During their spare time, Jon and his partner, Linda, enjoy running, including a recent Queenstown half marathon, swimming, hiking and travel.
