Dunedin green lights climate change stand
(Dunedin – Sunday, 4 June 2017) - The Dunedin City Council has lit up its amenity buildings in green, along with Mayors across the USA and around the world, to signal global support for the Paris Climate Change Agreement. This follows US President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Agreement.

The USA is now just one of three countries not to be a signatory, but almost 200 US mayors representing around 51 million Americans, have committed to continue upholding the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement and have created a National Climate Action Agenda. The mayors are pushing for new action to meet the 1.5 degrees Celcius target and a clean energy economy.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull says it is important to show support for the Agreement and to join with green cities around the world.

“Many cities around the world are committing to ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, share lessons and hold each other accountable. Dunedin has already stopped investing in fossil fuels and has set its own targets to reduce emissions. Around the country and the globe, cities are working together and our green light display is a visible support of the stand taken by the Mayors against Mr Trump’s withdrawal of the US from the Paris Agreement.”

Over the next few nights DCC owned amenities Wall Street, the Town Hall, Toitu Otago Settlers Museum are being lit up in green over the holiday weekend to signal support for climate action. The Regent Theatre is also separately supporting the stand, the well-known building will also be bathed in green light at night.
