Islamic Women’s Council's Netball Tournament in Auckland

20 May 2017
Press Release: Netball Tournament in Auckland

The Auckland region of the Islamic Women’s Council of New Zealand is running a netball tournament today, as it has many, many times in the past. The tournament is a private event, by invitation only, at Zayed College. It has previously been held at other premises.

This event is organised in order for Muslim women, young and old, to be able to participate in a sporting competition in an environment that they feel comfortable with. There are many benefits in being involved in sporting activities of this kind, beyond just the physical exercise. It improves confidence, builds relationships and skills in team work.

Because many of the women participating would normally wear hijab, and this is an opportunity for them to participate in sportswear and without their hijab, men are not allowed at the tournament venue. We sympathise with the father who would like to watch his daughters participate, but we also know that his attendance would mean that many other women would not be participating as a result. He has the opportunity to enter his daughters in public tournaments run by others.

We continue to be committed to providing sporting and outdoor recreational activities for women in a safe environment.
