Annual protest against Deep Sea Oil Drilling
Annual protest against Deep Sea Oil Drilling occurring with a new message: We will keep fighting
On the 20th of May, protesters will be standing up together against Deep Sea Oil Drilling at the 7th consecutive Hands Across the Sand event at New Brighton Pier.
“We have stood here for six years, telling our government and oil companies that deep sea oil drilling is a spectacularly bad idea . And we will continue to stand” says Oil Free Otautahi spokesperson and student Bridget White.
“Deep sea oil drilling threatens our coastline. It threatens the wonderful marine wildlife that make their home in our waters, and it threatens the experience that New Zealanders have grown to love and cherish- a trip to the beach.”
The link between climate change and deep sea oil drilling is also undeniable. “We need to stop burning fossil fuels. We do not need to find more- we need to continue to work on alternate means of energy. Fossil fuels are from the dinosaur days.” says White.
Hands Across the Sand is an event that spans
the world, where people stand on beaches together to say no
to fossil fuel extraction and yes to alternate energy means.
“This event is a very special experience to be a part of.
It is a union of people everywhere, from all walks of life,
saying the same thing. There is strength in that.” says
White.
