Forced Abortions and Sterilisations in China
New Zealand Government Complicit in Supporting Forced Abortions and Sterilisations in China
Media Release April 6th 2017
Right to Life is opposed to our government funding a culture of death. The New Zealand taxpayer provided nearly $7,000.000 to the controversial United Nations Population fund [UNFPA] for the financial year 2016/17. Our total funding since 2014 is $21,500,080. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Murray McCully advised Right to Life on 1st March that the government has not yet made a decision to provide extra funding to UNFPA to assist in making up the shortfall resulting from the cessation of American funding.
The new Washington administration announced Monday it will cut off U.S. funding for the United Nations Population Fund, on the basis that the UNFPA’s activities in China are complicit with that nation’s coercive population control program, the implementation of which includes forced abortion and involuntary sterilization and infanticide. The UNFPA has been found repeatedly over the years to be complicit in theChinese coercive abortion program under its previous one child, now two child policy. The cut amounts to at least $32.5 million for the 2017; the State Department said it will redirect the funds to the U.S. Agency for International Development, which provides medical care to families across the world.
It is indefensible and shameful that the New Zealand government refuses to have a policy on the horrendous crimes against humanity imposed on the Chinese people with its forced abortions and sterilisations. (Warning Graphic Photo heads article).
Under China’s One (now Two) Child Policy, women have been forcibly aborted up to the ninth month of pregnancy. Some of these forced abortions have been so violent that the women themselves have died, along with their full term babies. There have been brutal forced sterilizations as well, butchering women and leaving them disabled.
Where was the outcry from the UNFPA? What about the New Zealand Family Planning Association which also supports Chinas two child family policy? Right to Life believes that silence in the face of such atrocities is complicity. Dr. Martin Luther King once said, ‘In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.’ The UNFPA’s silence in the face of decades of forced abortion has been a sword in the wombs of millions of women and babies of China. Right to Life rejoices with them that the foot of the UNFPA is finally off of their necks.” New Zealand must not continue to fund this evil.
UNFPA’s former head, Dr. Nafis Sadik was awarded the Population Prize Award by the Chinese State Family Planning Commission in 2002.In 2001, the U.S. cut funding to UNFPA because an investigation, headed by then–Secretary of State Colin Powell, found that UNFPA was complicit in the coercive implementation of China’s one-child policy
