BPW NZ Joins the Huge Support for Green Party Bill on
Domestic Violence Leave
The New Zealand Federation of Business & Professional Women (BPW NZ) are pleased that Parliament chose to support women workers who are victims of violence.
“The passing of the first reading of the Green Party’s Domestic Violence Victims Protection Bill is a huge step forward in the empowerment of women in the workplace,” says President Vicky Mee.
“Our members have always been concerned about violence against women and girls based on our policy as well as regard for the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women, Beijing Platform for Action, concluding statements of the Commissions on the Status of Women and the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs).
“Statistics show that women suffer disproportionately from violence within family and domestic settings.
“Research has shown that businesses are losing valuable work hours and productivity because of violence against their women workers.
“BPW NZ is pleased that all political parties in Parliament saw the need to empower women in the workplace with their vote yesterday.
“Some businesses are already empowering women by providing leave for victims of violence against women and we applaud that – however, we need every business to do so,” says Ms Mee.
