National’s support for family violence victims a huge and positive step

Victims of domestic violence are a step closer to getting the support they need at work, with National announcing it
will support Jan Logie’s members bill at its first reading tomorrow.
The bill would allow people experiencing family violence to take 10 days’ special leave to attend court, move home or
seek support, without using sick leave or annual leave.
Justice minister Amy Adams says Ms Logie’s bill "needs work" but the issues are "worth discussing".
This means the bill has the support to go to a select committee.
"We are thrilled National has chosen to do the right thing and have the korero about this important legislation," PSA
National Secretary Erin Polaczuk says.
"Ms Logie’s bill recognises that what happens at home affects what happens at work.
"The PSA’s own research shows that each year, half of New Zealand employers will have a staff member who’s affected by
family violence.
"It costs businesses around $400 million a year, and the country $8 billion.
"We are aware National has some concerns about aspects of the bill, but select committee is exactly the right place to
discuss them.
"This is a win for victims of family violence - and the community groups, NGOs and unions who stand with them."
