Waiuku truckies take action over “some of the lowest wages in the region
Truck drivers at Knight and Dickey, the Waiuku-based haulage firm, are taking strike action from 6am on Thursday to protest what they say are some of the lowest wages in the region.
“The truckies at Knight and Dickey are finding it harder and harder to make ends meet,” said the workers’ representative, FIRST Union organiser Bryce Hamilton.
“They’re earning under the industry standard for bulk tippers and curtain siders. At the same time their costs are going up. Aucklanders are pushing house prices and rents up and things like school fees are due at this time of the year.”
The strike will begin at 6am on Thursday the 16th of February and end at 6am on Monday the 20th of February.
“This is going to be a hassle for the company, but our truckies are taking action as a last resort. They’ve tried to bargain. They’ve tried to reason. But management has forced their hand,” said Hamilton.
“They just want a fair go.”
