Rotary New Zealand World Community Service and Giving Tuesday are synonymous. This year celebrated for the fifth time next Tuesday 29
November 2016, Giving Tuesday supports the potential of social media and the generosity of people in New Zealand and
elsewhere to bring about real change locally and internationally; it provides a focus for them to encourage a donation
not only of money but of time and talents to address the world’s hardship. It encourages partnership between volunteer
groups, community to community, country to country. It brings together the collective power of a unique blend of
partners, volunteer and voluntary organisations, civil society, business and commerce, as well as families and
individuals - to encourage and amplify universal kindness. The Pacific Island countries during the 2016/2017 South
Pacific cyclone season are most likely to be in need of support again given the devastation of Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu in
2015 and Cyclone Winston in Fiji in 2016. When disaster strikes Rotary New Zealand responds when called upon with its
Emergency Response Kits and other relief supplies to individuals and communities,
Giving Tuesday unites humanitarian endeavours around the world, encouraging giving and enabling organisations like
Rotary to respond when disaster strikes. Giving Tuesday provides an incentive for people to empower one another whether
donor or beneficiary.
