McCully Should Be Explaining Funding of Clinton Foundation
11 NOVEMBER 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Taxpayers’ Union is calling on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Murray McCully, to explain what value taxpayers have received from the $7.7 million MFAT has donated to the Clinton Foundation’s flagship project, before any of the additional $6 million (already pledged) is handed over. Executive Director of the Taxpayers’ Union, Jordan Williams, says:
“Given the lessons of the Saudi Sheep saga, the last thing MFAT should be doing is handing out aid money for diplomatic purposes. That money should be used for programes which are the most effective at helping the world’s poor - not sidetracked into political objectives."
"It is possible that officials have reason to believe that the Clinton Foundation’s work does provide good value for money - but without explaining why and fronting up, New Zealand's involvement in this leaves a stench of buying political access."
“Like the Saudi sheep ‘AgriHub’ instead of answers, all we have got from MFAT is obfuscation. Taxpayers deserve better."
