Have your say on the Broadcasting (Election Programmes and Election Advertising) Amendment Bill
Public submissions are now open on the Broadcasting (Election Programmes and Election Advertising) Amendment Bill, which
is being considered by Parliament’s Justice and Electoral Committee.
The aim of the bill is to amend and update the Broadcasting Act 1989 in relation to political parties’ election
programmes on television and radio.
If passed, the bill would remove the requirements for opening and closing addresses to be broadcast at election time,
along with the need for Television New Zealand and Radio New Zealand to provide free broadcasting time for these
addresses. The funds allocated to a political party will remain the limit on the party’s use of television and radio for
party election programmes, but they would also be able to use that funding for Internet advertising. Other rules for the
broadcasting of election programmes would remain in place.
