Paddleboarding Or Tax Cuts?

Paddleboarding Or Tax Cuts?

3 NOVEMBER 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Taxpayers’ Union is backing ACT MP David Seymour's call for the Government to scrap the Major Events Fund. The Union’s Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“The Major Events Fund is simply a corporate welfare slush fund in drag. It is useful for politicians to gain access to photo opportunities under the guise of attracting events.”

“The Government can’t afford to boost the funding of mental health or reduce the tax burden on the poor, but apparently can find money for golf tournaments, sailing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Even a ‘mud festival’ in Rotorua got $1.5 million of funding (yes seriously).”

“The money, $13 million this year, surely has better uses. Thinking of them wouldn’t even require a Government grant."
