Solid Energy Monkey Off Taxpayers' Back

Solid Energy Monkey Off Taxpayers' Back

31 OCTOBER 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Taxpayers’ Union is celebrating the sale of SOE basket case Solid Energy to the private sector - a welcome U-turn on John Key's indications last year of more taxpayer-funded bailouts.

Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says, "This is the first real privatisation by the current Government, and what a relief it is. The sale protects taxpayers and provides for full payment to employees and trade creditors. It is a monkey off the taxpayers' back."

"The only ones frowning will be the Australian-owned banks. They had previously looked to be in-line for a taxpayer-funded bailout."

"The next SOE which should be sold is Kiwirail. Just like Solid Energy, Kiwirail is a taxpayer black hole with around $7,000 per New Zealand household spent on bailing it out since 2008."
