SST Congratulates Police And Justice Brewer on a Job Well Done
24th October 2016
“Drug-induced crime is out of control in New Zealand, causing terrible damage to so
many innocent people. Hard drugs are clearly linked to serious crimes like homicide and unprovoked violent assault, and
its police operations and strong judicial action that will
pave the way to eradicating them from our society.” ~ Scott Guthrie, Sensible Sentencing Trust.
In March 2015, police and customs officers discovered a massive 61kg haul of methamphetamine and repacked most of it
with a harmless placebo before allowing the shipment to be delivered to a storage unit in Mt Eden Auckland where the
operation was captured.
Kin Long Chan was found guilty of nine Class-A drug charges ranging from importing methamphetamine through to
possession for supply and was sentenced to 19 years and 3 months in prison. Co-offender Lok Sing Yip pleaded guilty to
seven Class-A drug charges ranging from importing methamphetamine to attempted supply, and was sentenced to 16 years and
6 months. Two other
co-offenders received sentences ranging from 8 to 12 years in prison.
"Methamphetamine is a significant driver of crime that does enormous damage to our communities. It ruins lives and
destroys families and (we are) determined to prevent the harm and victimisation it causes,” Police Commissioner, Mike Bush.
Sensible Sentencing’s national spokesperson on drugs, Scott Guthrie, says drugs have been wreaking havoc in our country for a very long time. He refers to tragedies like
the 2001 RSA murders committed by drugged-up William Bell, the 2007 gunning down of Lower Hutt man, Karl Kuchenbecker by
methamphetamine-high Graeme Burton, and the recent coward-punch death of Matthew Coley committed by Tyrone Palmer, who
was ramped up on a concoction of drugs and alcohol.
“This week our country has seen two more murders related to drugs and gangs. The facts are there. The evidence is
undeniable. Action must be taken to fight this very real drug war that is escalating, damaging hundreds of young brains,
and killing and injuring innocent New Zealanders. We [SST]congratulate our police force, customs, and Justice Brewster
with the success of this operation. With their intelligence and persistence, we can rid our country of the toxic scourge
of methamphetamine and other hard drugs.” ~ Scott Guthrie, Sensible Sentencing Trust.
