NSW Greyhound racing ban reversal ‘disappointing’

NZ animal rights advocacy group Direct Animal Action is disappointed with the reversal of the NSW ban on greyhound
racing, who had hoped the Australian state would help push New Zealand towards a complete ban. However they believe it's
still very bad news for the greyhound racing industry.
“The fact that NSW has opted for a tough regulatory approach is less than ideal, however it doesn't change the fact that
greyhounds suffer and die in New Zealand every year for the sport” says Direct Animal Action spokesperson Amie Wolken.
The NSW Government has proposed tough penalties and strict regulations instead of a blanket ban.
“NSW might have reversed the ban, but the regulatory controls they’ve proposed will be almost impossible for the
industry to stick to. It’s a grim outlook for the greyhound racing industry either way” says Wolken.
“Regulatory control in New Zealand has consistently failed to protect the dogs in this country. The greyhound racing
industry in New Zealand has proven that it can’t prevent the deaths of hundreds of dogs disposed of as wastage every
year”.
Direct Animal Action protested outside Greyhound Racing New Zealand’s AGM last Saturday in Auckland, with other groups
around the country holding similar events.
“We’ll keep standing up to the greyhound racing industry, who risk life and limb of every dog it breeds. A ban is the
only way we can ensure no more greyhounds suffer for profit”.
