Home Detention For Child Abuse Disgraceful – Heke
6th October 2016
“This is child abuse at its worst and yet still our judges who are supposedly the gate keepers of society do nothing. It’s horrifying to say the least and our judicial system should be ashamed.” Hayley Heke – SST Waikato Spokesperson
Sensible Sentencing Trust Waikato Spokesperson, Hayley Heke, believes if neighbours had not spoken out and bought the abuse of four young children to the attention of authorities, some of the children could very well have died.
Hayley is furious and says for what amounted to years of abuse the offenders got slapped with a pitiful seven months home detention. “What sort of message is that sending society? That you can abuse your kids, beat your kids, tie them up like dogs and get a pitiful home detention sentence. Disgraceful!”
During the sentencing Judge Connell said "You were yelling and swearing at him to pick something up … you took a step down and kicked him, causing him to fall over and cry."
Hayley said “This is child abuse at its worst and yet still our judges who are supposedly the gate keepers of society do nothing. It’s horrifying to say the least and our judicial system should be ashamed.”
“This sort of sentence sends out a message that if you abuse your children, you can have a seven month holiday at home while someone else looks after them for you.”
“This pathetic sentence is in no way a deterrent to future offending against children by adults.”
Heke says the Sensible Sentencing Trust is calling on Crown Law to appeal this sentence to show the child abusers of our country that enough is enough and we as a nation will not tolerate the abuse of our children.
“Any offender who abuses a child must be held to account and we believe home detention fails to do that.”
