Making it work for people with disabilities

Making it work for people with disabilities

Media release
21 September 2016

Workforce inequality for people with disabilities continues to prevent inclusion, here and overseas, but new ways forward are in the pipeline.

With one fifth of working-age New Zealanders experiencing some form of disability, IHC is closer to addressing this issue by hosting the IHC Workability International Conference, Make it Work in Auckland next week.

International speakers from myriad industries will highlight the clear wellbeing and economic benefits for people with disabilities, communities and countries, when all citizens are engaged fairly in employment.

Keynote speakers include Brent Wilton, Global Head of Workplace Rights for Coca-Cola, who has spent many years developing human rights and business principles globally, working with the United Nations (UN) and international Governments on social policy negotiations and resolutions.

As the UN’s Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Catalina Devandas Aguilar will also be speaking on the need for persons with disabilities to be guaranteed rights and freedoms without discrimination.
Specialist career coach and employment market analyst Steve Shepherd will be explaining the future of work, and the opportunities and challenges that will create for the sector.

With 30 international and national presenters, the three-day conference will explore solutions for the sector, showing that for disabled workers it’s more than just a job - it’s about being valued, useful and included. And for business it’s about accessing diverse talent and a workforce that reflects the whole community, resulting in individual, economic and social returns.
