Majority now support a Kiwi Head of State
Media release: Poll indicates majority now support a
Kiwi Head of State
The results of a Curia poll
on the future of New Zealand's head of State shows a
majority of New Zealanders now favour change.
"The flag debate, the Prince Charles visit, Brexit and the Queen's 90th jubilee have all focused Kiwis minds on the head of State issue" said New Zealand Republic campaign chair Savage.
The poll of 1,000+ voting age New Zealanders, taken during August, found 59% of respondents were in favour of a New Zealand head of State, versus 34% who wanted the British monarch. The question was first asked in March 2014 and showed support starting at 44%. By April 2015 it was up to 47%.
"This poll is a positive result for our campaign, and shows that our clear, practical proposals are being well received. But, we know we still have a lot of work to do explaining why having a Kiwi Head of State is the better option" concluded Savage.
NOTES
The poll was conducted by Curia Market Research Limited for NZ Republic Inc, and had 1,006 voting-age participants, weighted for age, geography and income across New Zealand.
