Judicial Review of Chief Inspector’s Report

11 August 2016
Judicial Review of Chief Inspector’s Report

Please attribute to Ray Smith, Chief Executive, Department of Corrections.

The Department of Corrections has received the High Court’s judgment in relation to Serco’s Judicial Review of the Chief Inspector’s report into allegations of “Fight Clubs” at the Mt Eden Corrections Facility.

In her summary the Judge notes that; “The investigation was fair and the report is without error.”

There is now a period in which the parties have the opportunity to consider the judgment and as such I do not intend to make any public comment on this in the interim.

I must consider when and in what form the report is to be released to ensure any security and privacy issues are managed which is why I will be consulting with the Office of the Ombudsman.

Following the Department’s move to “Step In” and manage MECF in July last year, and the subsequent decision not to renew Serco’s contract, the transition to full Corrections staffing is progressing with the recent appointment of a Prison Director.
