Tourism infrastructure report released

Tourism infrastructure report released

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment today released an in-depth report on tourism infrastructure aimed at providing reliable information for those interested in the New Zealand tourism sector.

Deputy Chief Executive Labour Science and Enterprise Paul Stocks says the report is the first in the new Tourism Insight Series, produced in support of a suite of initiatives that form the government tourism strategy.

“The tourism strategy brings together work being done across government to help boost the economic contribution of tourism across New Zealand. The strategy focuses on attracting the right mix of visitors, ensuring visitors have a high quality experience, and supporting all regions to respond to and benefit from increasing visitor numbers throughout the year,” Mr Stocks says.

The Tourism Infrastructure report is an important contribution to this strategy as it provides a snapshot of the current demand for and supply of infrastructure such as accommodation, transport, airports and cellular network coverage.

“The report sets out detailed information for those interested in investing in the tourism sector.

“The sector is thriving, with visitor arrivals up by 10 per cent, to 3.3 million, in the year to March 2016, and expected to grow by 5.4 per cent a year, reaching 4.5 million visitors in 2022. Quality infrastructure is essential to supporting this growth.”

The Tourism Infrastructure report complements research recently completed as part of the government’s hotel infrastructure investment programme to accelerate new private sector investment in New Zealand’s hotel infrastructure, which estimated 26 additional hotels will be needed over the next ten years.
