Tribe thanks CEO for work and achievements

The Chairs of the two key representative bodies of Waikato-Tainui today thanked outgoing CEO, Parekawhia McLean, for her achievements and dedication to the development of the iwi and of iwi members.

Ms Mclean this week informed Te Arataura – the tribal executive – that after five-and-a-half years it was time to look for a new challenge.

Rahui Papa, Chair of Te Arataura, said Parekawhia had overseen a key period of growth and development by Waikato-Tainui.

“One particular project that stands out for me was her work on the review and implementation of Whakatupuranga 2050. This is the blue print which will drive the development of Waikato-Tainui for the next three decades,” he said.

Chair of Te Whakakitenga o Waikato – tribal Parliament- Maxine Moana-Tuwhangai, said Parekawhia had set a fine example to iwi members, especially women, as to what they can achieve.

“Her successes as our CEO and involvement in the Global Women organisation and being a finalist in the 2016 Women of Influence Awards I hope inspires our young Maori women to aim high,” she said.

Parekawhia said it had been an honour to work for her own iwi and is proud of what she and her staff have achieved over the last five years.

“There have been many highlights, although a few in particular stand out.

“Helping get the relativity payment of $87.5m to see our settlement honoured by the Crown was extremely satisfying, as was the return of Rangiriri lands which is where the process really began.

“The implementation of the tribal education strategy Ko Te Mana Maatauranga and the award winning Waikato-Tainui Tai tumu tai Pari tai Ao Iwi environmental plan are two others kaupapa I think we can all be proud of.

“There are many people to thank for the wonderful support they have given me, especially Kiingi Tuheitia, my staff, and members of Te Whakakitenga, Te Arataura and across the iwi.

“We have many great people, doing many great things. I believe future for Waikato-Tainui is bright,” she said.

Parekawhia will finish next month. She said she was looking forward to having a bit of a break before considering what she would do next,” Parekawhia said.
