“This is just another example of the damage that drugs are doing to this country and this government needs to wake up and realise that New Zealand is in the grip of a major drug epidemic” Guthrie
Troy Solomon, 25, told police he had just got high when he found his baby girl drowning in two inches of water in the bath. However, a post-mortem examination revealed Aaliyah Izabella Betty Solomon had died from two blunt force injuries to her skull and could not have possibly have died from drowning because she had no water in her lungs. The pathologist report said Aaliyah’s injuries were consistent with the child being swung by her leg with "considerable violent and deliberate force" into a hard object with her head breaking the speed.
“Time and time again we are hearing stories of horrific rapes and injuries sustained by innocent defenceless babies from their drug induced parents or caregivers who just don’t care about anyone but themselves and it’s disgusting” We as a nation need to stand up to these thugs and say enough is enough “Guthrie
Aaliyah died from "catastrophic" head injuries caused by blunt force trauma. She also suffered a spiral fracture to her left femur, an injury, that was due to a twisting force.
Solomon cried in the dock as the verdict was delivered while family members wept in the public gallery.
“The only tears Solomon shed were tears of horror at the thought of spending at least 17 years in prison for murder”. Guthrie
Justice Paul Davison said there was no evidence that Solomon had any remorse for his actions. He had shown a high degree of self-interest and callousness in the various stories he told police about how Aaliyah's injuries were sustained and that Solomon had continued to portray himself as the victim. Even his probation officer said Solomon maintained his innocence and continued to view himself as a victim of the criminal justice system.
