The Law is Flawed: Occupy the Auckland High Court

The New Zealand justice system is anything but just. It perpetuates issues like racism, sexism, transphobia, and ableism.

The Law is Flawed will be a protest rally and sit-in at the Auckland High Court on Friday July 29th 10am.

Our aim is to 1) raise greater awareness around our country's unjust justice system; 2) create wider community dialogue; and 3) call for the implementation of policies that address the harm caused by our criminal justice system.

From five separate United Nations reports, New Zealand has come up short in terms of human rights and international law. Our criminal justice system continues to play a key role in normalizing racism, and the mass incarceration of POC (peoples of colour) communities, in Aotearoa.

More needs to be done to protect the well-being and rights of incarcerated people with disabilities as well as whānau with mental health and/or substance use concerns.

More needs to be done to address the imbedded racism within the criminal justice system, at all levels. This includes racial profiling towards POC communities.

We also need to have a serious dialogue around the disproportionate numbers of Māori, especially youth and women, in prison.

We also need to garner greater dialogue and action, around systemic alternatives to the prison-industrial complex.

We invite all whānau to come to this gathering on July 29th, and rally against our unjust justice system.

So let's recognize, mobilize, and transform the social landscape. The Law is Flawed, it's time for change!

Date/time: 10am Friday July 29th
Location: Auckland High Court. Cnr Waterloo Quadrant & Parliament Street
