Major Events Development Fund invests in WhitewaterXL New Zealand Invitational
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment today announced that $600,000 will be invested into the WhitewaterXL New Zealand Invitational for the 2016, 2017 and 2018 events through the Major Events Development Fund (MEDF).
Devorah Blumberg, Manager of Major Events at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment says that the WhitewaterXL Invitational offers a world-first format in white water slalom competition.
“All leading international high-performance slalom athletes will be invited to compete in the WhitewaterXL Invitational, and will also have the chance to train in New Zealand for up to three months.
“This event positions New Zealand as a place for off-season training for northern hemisphere athletes and provides a number of promotional opportunities for New Zealand. Athletes will come from across the globe to compete in the purpose built Vector Wero Whitewater Park in Auckland,” says Ms Blumberg.
“The WhitewaterXL invitational will test the most seasoned of athletes, establishing the event as an exciting feature in the busy racing calendar.
The Government invests, through the Major Events Development Fund, in major events that generate significant immediate and long-term benefits to New Zealand.
