NetSafe announced as the Approved Agency

NetSafe to manage and assist internet users with online harassment under a new civil enforcement regime
NetSafe welcomes the Minister of Justice’s announcement that it has been appointed as the Approved Agency under the Harmful Digital Communications Act.

This appointment will see NetSafe manage and assist internet users with cases of online harassment under a new civil enforcement regime. As the Approved Agency, NetSafe will also be required to provide online safety advice, educate the public and collaborate with service providers and agencies to achieve the purpose of the legislation.

“Since 1998 NetSafe has provided support, education and advice to New Zealand internet users,” said NetSafe’s Executive Director, Martin Cocker. “We have helped resolve many complaints about online bullying and harassment for people throughout the country by working with government, industry and community organisations in New Zealand and all over the world.”

“The Approved Agency formally expands NetSafe’s services and provides the opportunity to help people in line with the expectations of the Act,” said Rick Shera, chairperson of NetSafe’s board. “We welcome the responsibility that comes with it and look forward to working with the Ministry of Justice, the District Court, the Ministry of Education, industry and enforcement partners to further develop our processes and implement the Agency.”

NetSafe will now focus on establishing the services needed for the Approved Agency. Further details about the service will be provided closer to the November launch. Until that time, NetSafe will continue to assist internet users with various digital challenges and can advise the options currently available to deal with harmful online content.
