Budget 2016 Sneaky Tax Hike Will See Households, Motorists Paying More

The Taxpayers’ Union is labelling the $50 million increase in the fire insurance levy a sneaky tax hike, following changes announced in
Budget 2016. Taxpayers’ Union spokesman, Ben Craven, says:
“We have seen this sort of thing from the Government before with the telecommunications levy. The Government tells the industry to couch up money, the industry has to raise prices and the consumer is left worse
off.”
“You can see why these sorts of schemes appeal to Minister Dunne and others. Consumers place the blame on the company
for increasing prices while the Government manages to line its coffers without copping any flack.”
Reports indicate that small businesses and the average homeowner will be paying an additional $32 and $15 dollars per year respectively. The levy will also impact upon insured motorists. In total the Government is set to increase revenue through this levy by $50 million.
“For most people an increase of this size will not break the bank. But that’s beside the point. Every extra dollar taken
off individuals and businesses is another dollar that could have been used in the productive economy.”
