Budget 2016’s “meaningful recognition” of Whānau Ora and whānau need
Te Pou Matakana Chairperson Merepeka Raukawa-Tait has applauded yesterday’s Budget Day announcement of increased support
for Whānau Ora as a “meaningful recognition of the sectors role in improving Whānau wellbeing”, and the urgent demand in
our communities for even greater Whānau Ora support.
As part of yesterday’s Budget it was announced that the Whānau Ora sector is to receive a $40 million operating funding
boost over the next four years.
“This is a significant vote of confidence in Whānau Ora and the commissioning model approach, and will allow Te Pou
Matakana and our provider partners to support even more whānau through hardship to wellness,” says Raukawa-Tait.
“Our whānau face increasing challenges, with growing inequality and rising living costs, and need services which not
only deliver direct help for moments that matter, but build on their strengths and support them to achieve their dreams
for themselves and their whānau.”
Te Pou Matakana works collaboratively both with Whānau Ora partners and Whānau to maximise outcomes for Whānau in
crucial areas such as reducing household debt, managing health and disability issues, and improving financial literacy
skills.
“We would also like to acknowledge our providers who have successfully co-designed services with their communities – by
whānau, for whānau, with whānau,” says Raukawa-Tait.
