World Hot Sauce Award winners making Northland ‘Hot’
Two 2016 World Hot Sauce Award winners are making Northland ‘hot’ for more than its climate, and they are to be congratulated for their success in the American-based competition, says Northland Inc Business Growth Manager David Templeton.
Hokianga’s organic chilli growers Fire Dragon Chillies, owned by Clint Meyer, a member of Northland Food and Wine producers, took out the gold medal for the third year in a row in the Extra Hot Section with their Fire Dragon Chillies Deadly Chilli Sauce, made from a blend of the hottest chillies on earth.
Dargaville’s Wild West Worcester, owned by Katie Le Noel who has been making her own handmade Worcester sauce for 30 years, won the bronze medal in two categories - for their Sweet Black Sauce in the Hot Sauce category and their Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce in the Marketing category.
“Well done to both producers for continuing to put Northland on the culinary map and adding to the region’s and the country’s reputation for creating world class hot sauces,” says David.
“The awards add to Northland’s growing reputation as a source of quality wine and food products in New Zealand.”
New Zealand won a combined haul of 11 medals at this year’s Awards which featured over 1000 products entered by 161 companies from 14 countries at the ceremony held in Louisiana, USA.
Other New Zealand winners at the awards were Baxter’s Original and Huffman Sauces of Wellington with Lucky Taco and Culley’s from Auckland.
All the World Hot Sauce winners will be at the inaugural New Zealand Hot Sauce Festival in Auckland on June 25 which will feature at least 13 national hot sauce producers and at least 100 sauces as well as international sauces at the New Zealand Festival.
