Video helps victims of crime know what to expect

The Ministry of Justice has released an animated video that explains how victims of crime can expect to be treated and what happens during the criminal justice process.

Deputy Secretary Legal and Operational Services, Sarah Turner, says the video is one of a number of initiatives led by the Ministry of Justice aimed at improving victims’ experiences with the justice system.

"We know there is a lot of information available for victims which is sometimes hard to absorb, particularly at the time of the crime. This video simplifies a lot of that information and also reassures victims that support is available throughout the criminal justice process,” says Ms Turner.

The video supports the Victims Code, which aims to increase victims’ awareness of their rights, improve accessibility to information and make government agencies more accountable when providing services to victims.

The video was developed in consultation with New Zealand Police, the Department of Corrections and Victim Support.

“It is a great example of justice sector agencies working together, sharing information and taking steps to improve the justice experience for victims,” says Ms Turner.
