Passenger arrested for $1.5 million meth in baby carriers

A 20-year-old Latvian man has appeared in the Manukau District Court this afternoon, charged with importing approximately 1.5 kilograms of methamphetamine or ‘P’ found hidden in his luggage.

He arrived at Auckland Airport on a flight from Dubai on Saturday night, and was arrested after Customs officers located methamphetamine inside baby carriers and boxes of neck ties. This amount of methamphetamine has a street value of around $1.5 million.

Customs Investigations Manager, Maurice O’Brien says this arrest is a good example of Customs’ multi- layered and intelligence led approach to border enforcement.

“In this instance, it was very good work from our airport officers in profiling the passenger and inspecting his baggage contents. Customs continues to focus on high risk passengers and goods, and every seizure is a win and success for us."

“The real win, as always, is this hideous drug that causes so much damage to our society did not make it beyond the border to be distributed amongst our community by those that do this purely for greed."
