Campaign to change the flag reaches one million people
One million people have been reached by the
Change the NZ Flag campaign in the past week, according to
campaign Chairman Lewis Holden.
“Our Facebook and Twitter accounts have been lighting up
social media”.
“More than 130,000 people have watched our first video showing New Zealanders across the spectrum asking for change, and 40,000 people have watched Dan Carter call for change,” said Mr Holden.
“We’re delighted, but not surprised that the campaign has been able to get out to such a cross section of New Zealand society.
“The public voice is continuing to evolve on the flag. People understand that this campaign isn’t defined by politics, social status, or location, it’s defined by New Zealanders for New Zealanders.”
Momentum is building by the day for the
campaign across a diverse range of media outlets.
In the
last week, Kumar Suresh from the Indian Weekender wrote an
editorial in support of flag change.
“Even our servicemen and women who are buried in battlefield cemeteries across the other side of the world have the silver fern engraved on their headstones, not the New Zealand flag,” wrote Mr Suresh.
He continued: “Therefore it becomes imperative that we have a flag that is simple but yet powerful enough to take our story and our people to the world”.
New Zealand actor Oscar Kightley has also joined the calls for change by appearing in supporter’s video.
TVNZ’s Peter Williams is also enthusiastic for change. On Monday’s Seven Sharp, Williams said: “the only reason I’ve gone public is because I was asked, I had this on my Facebook page since Christmas”.
International business consultant Graham Vaughan-Jones said it would be a tragedy if New Zealand doesn’t adopt the new flag, because “we’re missing out on millions of dollars of export revenue by not having a unique flag”.
