More leaders get behind Change the NZ Flag
A new wave of high profile New Zealanders has joined the Change the NZ Flag movement, following yesterday’s news that 21 business, sport, civic and cultural leaders were lending their voices to the issue.
Iwi Leader Joe Harawira, Actor and Writer Oscar Kightley, Lawyer Mai Chen, Philanthropist Dame Rosie Horton, and Community Leader Jenny Wang have called on New Zealanders to vote for change.
Change the NZ Flag Chairman Lewis Holden says the movement was definitely gaining momentum.
“This issue is starting to resonate with more people and we’re finding the fern and stars design is gaining support with people of all walks of life.
“It’s really important that we use symbols that represent our modern Pacific nation and the fern is one of those iconic symbols.
“It’s also time we shook off the confusion with Australia once and for all.
“We’ve got sports stars on the global stage who are fed up with being identified with an Australian flag.
“Wouldn’t it be great if our flag bearer at the Olympic Games in Rio was able to carry the new fern and stars flag into the Olympic stadium later this year?”
Mr Holden said he expected the Change the NZ Flag campaign would grow in popularity as more New Zealanders considered the merits and benefits of a new flag.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to vote for change and get a flag that represents New Zealand and New Zealanders in the 21st Century.”
