Major Events Fund invests in the World Shearing and Wool Handling Championships 2017
The Government is investing $260,000 through the Major Events Development Fund in the Golden Shears World Shearing and
Wool Handling Championships to be held in Invercargill from 9 - 11 February 2017.
Participants and spectators from over 30 countries are expected to attend the iconic event, with competitors travelling
from as far as the Falkland Islands and Isle of Man to compete.
Devorah Blumberg, Manager of New Zealand Major Events, says New Zealand is known worldwide for its thriving agricultural
sector.
“The Government’s investment in the World Championships will showcase the region of Southland and promote our growing
innovations in the wool industry.”
New Zealand has a strong record when it comes to competing in the World Championships which began in 1977. New Zealand
competitors have won 10 of the last 14 individual shearing titles with recently knighted Sir David Fagan winning five of
these.
The Government invests, through the Major Event Development Fund, in major events that seek to generate significant
immediate and long-term benefits to New Zealand, and lift and maintain New Zealand’s international profile.
