Where Have All The Children Gone?

Nearly 50,000 5 year olds commenced their schooling in the first week of February, happy and laughing with the joy of living. Sadly there were 15,863 5 year olds missing. These are the children who were considered of little worth and whose lives were terminated by abortion in 2011. They are nameless and are recorded as a cold statistic in the Abortion Supervisory Committee’s annual report to Parliament in 2005.

Their absence is mourned for they were created with many talents to enrich our society. Our society is impoverished by their absence. We should also have deep sympathy for their mothers who will be mourning the loss of their children. Mothers who so often were coerced in to an unwanted abortion because of the abandonment of the mother and child and because of pressure from family and friends.

When is the government going to recognise that every child is endowed at conception with an inalienable right to life and should be afforded with the respect and protection that is accorded to the human person?

The National led government is committed to reducing child abuse in New Zealand. Why therefore does it not recognise that child abuse begins in the womb? How can our government say that you may not smack your child, yet allow the violent destruction of the child before birth? It is a great injustice that the killing of these children was sanctioned and funded by the government; this is a violation of human rights. When will the government ensure that every child has a right to be born and the right to enjoy an education and contribute to society?

The Hon Paula Bennett, Minister of Social Welfare has stated, “I want to see every child in this country thriving and achieving and having the best start that they can.” A commendable objective. The tragic reality is that each year, for more than 13,000 innocent unborn, they are denied the right to be born. They are cruelly and painfully dismembered in their mother’s womb, their bodily remains deemed to be medical waste to be incinerated and disposed of at the community’s landfill. Right to Life has written to the Minister requesting that she promote a campaign to encourage adoption as the loving option, in preference to the violence of abortion. The Minister has responded that she does not support such an initiative.

The Labour Party in its Policy Platform, supports safe, affordable and universal access to contraception, sexual and reproductive services and information. Labour to its shame recognises all women have the right to make their own choices about their own bodies, and should have access to abortion services. This is a policy that could have been written by Family Planning. It is a great injustice that the Labour Party does not recognise the inalienable right to life of every unborn child. It is a matter of great concern that the Labour Party which claims to be an advocate for the marginalised in society refuses to defend the unborn child, the weakest and most defenceless member of our human family.
