Sensible Sentencing Trust Horrified by the Reported Crime Statistics of Deported Offenders

A police briefing to Police Minister Judith Collins in December showed 30 per cent of deportees had come to police attention for re-offending since December 2014.

On Monday, Justice Minister Amy Adams said the latest Police figures were in line with New Zealand prisoners' general re-offending rates.

Sensible Sentencing Trust’s National Victim Adviser Leigh Woodman said it also begs the question if as Amy Adam’s stated, the latest Police figures are indeed in line with New Zealand prisoners’ general reoffending rates, does that then mean prisoners in New Zealand, who have and do receive rehabilitation, still re-offend at as high a rate as those who are left to their own devices, as are many deportees sent back to New Zealand from Australia once they have either completed their sentences, or been released on parole?

Woodman says if that is the case, then all the time, money and resources spent on rehabilitation are a waste of money and it is shocking to think this could be a PC experiment gone horribly wrong.

“The crimes committed by a number of the deportees, some for violent and sexual offences, in such a short time frame is horrendous, and quite frankly frightening.”

“The concern shown for the human rights of the offenders appears to far outweigh the need to ensure public safety. We must never lose sight of the fact that for every crime, there is a victim and every victim is one too many.”
