New child poverty figures show need for urgent, bold action

New figures released by the Child Poverty Monitor show a significant increase in child poverty – up from 260,000 to 305,000 children (using an income based measure).

“The reality behind these figures is that right now there are many, many children doing it tough" says Lisa Woods, Every Child Count’s Executive Officer.

“While we are pleased that the Government is focused on child poverty, these latest figures provide a pretty stark message – we’re alarmingly behind.

“Child poverty isn’t straightforward, but at the same time it’s by no means unsolvable – we know that with the right action we can reverse the current situation. Keeping in mind it hasn’t always been this bad - in 1985 the percentage of children in families experiencing income poverty was 15%, compared to 29% now.

“To make a difference we need to see systematic and coordinated action. Too often successive Governments have taken a piecemeal approach to policies for children, when we know from research that ending child poverty requires comprehensive action across a range of areas, including addressing disparities, ensuring adequate income, affordable housing, supporting parents, strengthening communities, and providing accessible and quality early childhood education.

“Importantly we also need to build on the incredible strength and knowledge of communities across Aotearoa New Zealand. There is great stuff happening out there, and it’s local insights and knowledge that will help lead the far-reaching change needed” says Lisa.

Government alone can’t fix child poverty – we all play a part. To kick start meaningful change Every Child Counts calls on the Government to talk with all parts of society to develop a plan of action – including targets and measures.
