“Craddock Farms could damage our country’s reputation"

Activists warn, “Craddock Farms could damage our country’s reputation”

As a result of public opposition this week a ban on sow stalls in the pig industry comes into effect in New Zealand. Animal rights activists want the Government to take the same action for caged hens by banning colony cages in egg production.

The activists say the first step towards achieving this is to stop Craddock Farms building a mega colony cage farm in Patumahoe (1).

“In recent years our animal agriculture sector has come under close public scrutiny. This means the Government must act wisely to protect our country’s reputation,”

“The ban on sow stalls that comes into effect this week shows the Government can act to lessen cruelty in factory farming if they choose to,” says Stop Craddock Farms spokesperson Deirdre Sims.

“We’re calling on the Government to take the same action for egg laying hens by banning colony cages. Overseas countries like Austria, Germany and Switzerland are already phasing out colony cages yet we’re just introducing them,”

“Do we really want to fall further behind more progressive nations by allowing Craddock Farms to build what would be one of New Zealand’s largest factory farms?”

“If Craddock Farms are given consent to build; we’ll be escalating our tactics to reiterate the urgency for our Government to act,” says Ms Sims.
