Deserving of More than Just One Day
Tomorrow is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and is recognised annually on the 3rd of December. The
goal of 2015 is Inclusion matters: access and empowerment for people of all abilities.
“This International Day is a reminder that arthritis is one of the leading causes of disability in our country.” says
Arthritis New Zealand Chief Executive Sandra Kirby, with 578,000 New Zealanders with a diagnosis of one of the more than
140 different forms.
“Today is a reminder that not all disabilities are obvious” says Sandra Kirby, For many of these people their condition
will mean they struggle with some daily activities – like dressing; going to work or school; playing or doing community
work.
We call on employers to be aware of people with arthritis in their workplace. With a growing number of New Zealanders
being diagnosed with arthritis, either you, one of your family or friends will have one of the chronic conditions that
are called arthritis. While employers may find this challenging the reality is that minor adjustments – such as some
flexibility around work hours - can ensure that a person with arthritis remains your valued staff member.

can access information and support and access our land and water based exercise programmes which ensure their inclusion
in every day activities.“Becoming more physically active with arthritis, while a daunting prospect has shown to
contribute to physical and mental well-being, maintain strength and improve joint function. “Arthritis New Zealand is
the national organisation focussed on raising awareness, and continues to strongly advocate for those with the condition
and provide support and advice throughout the year and not just on this day .” she says.
