Commission welcomes Māori language plan for Auckland
The Māori Language Commission has welcomed plans to get everyone in Auckland speaking the Māori language.
“This is music to our ears because it is our vision to hear and see this country’s indigenous language resonate across
Aotearoa. And what better place to start than our country’s largest and most multi-cultural city,” said the commission’s
chief executive Ngahiwi Apanui.
“Aucklanders have nothing to fear from learning the Māori language and I encourage other councils throughout the country
to adopt similar language plans.
“I salute COMET and their chief executive Susan Warren for developing a really innovative and brave plan and for
standing up for the Māori language and wanting to make it a normal part of everyday life in Auckland. Kia ora!”
