WGTN think tank - pre Paris Climate Change
Conference
Today, two members of Deconstructing Paris
(a Wellington based legal think-tank) fly to Europe ahead of
the Paris climate summit of 2015, the largest ever
international UN meeting on climate change.
In association with both Victoria University of Wellington and the Aotearoa Youth Leadership Institute, they will attend the conference as accredited observers and will gain valuable insider knowledge on the negotiations as they unfold.
These two senior law students from New Zealand, Simon and Lottie, have been part of a team of lawyers dissecting the draft UN agreement over the last nine months. With the final deadline fast approaching, they hope to provide direct information to their team in Wellington for public dissemination and critique.
Although the unfortunate and devastating
events that took place in Paris last week have certainly
created hurdles for the two students, Simon and Lottie
refuse to be deterred from attending the conference. As
stated by Simon Hillier, "this conference is just too
important. It will be a critical step in resolving the
global dilemma of climate change and will provide the
foundation for a less carbon dependent world. It is
important that the public are aware of this conference and
know just what world leaders are disputing during the coming
weeks."
Both Simon and Lottie arrive in Paris on the 29th of November, just a day before the summit and will remain in the city for the entirety of the two week conference. They have observer access to much of the conference and will be able to deliver first hand information as it happens.
