Council shows support for Paris
Christchurch City Council is showing its support to Paris and the local French community following the events of last
week.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel will place a wreath at the French flag post in Akaroa on Saturday in a mark of respect and
remembrance for the victims of the Paris attack. She is encouraging people to attend if they wish.
"Christchurch has strong historical ties with France so the tragic events which took place in Paris reverberate strongly
in our community," says Mayor Dalziel.
"I have personally written to Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris, expressing sorrow on behalf of all Christchurch people. In
my letter I told her that we say "kia kaha Paris", as we stand with them in their grief and resolve.
"Like any city recovering from tragedy, Paris has come together and here in Christchurch we are expressing our
solidarity and support for our French counterparts in several ways."
Condolence books are available at Akaroa Library and the ground floor of the Civic Offices for the public to sign and
express their sentiments. The Tricolore is also flying at half-mast on Park Terrace.
New Brighton Pier and the Fanfare sculpture at Christchurch's northern entrance were also illuminated in the colours of
the republic.
