Human Rights Commission urges violent Kiwis to have the courage to change

Kiwi men with a violence problem need to talk about it and to get help says Human Rights Commissioner Dr Jackie Blue.

“The bravest thing a violent man can do is to challenge himself to change – men like White Ribbon Champion Phil Paikea,” said Dr Blue.

“We endorse and support Phil and hope other Kiwi men listen to his story and choose change.”

This week Phil offered support to broadcaster Tony Veitch whose attack on his former partner returned to the headlines this week.

“We do not condone Tony’s past behaviour but neither do we condone recent online attacks upon him. Working to change is something we should support him in as well as any other former abusers,” said Dr Blue.

“Rehabilitation, reconciliation and redemption. There are many stories of New Zealanders who have changed and they’ve done so with honesty, courage and support. Where there is violence Kiwis need the courage and backing to speak out, to talk about it, to change their lives and the lives of those they love.”
