Moves on equal pay welcomed
The Public Service Association welcomes the news that the Government will begin discussions with employers and unions to develop principles for dealing with claims of pay equity under the Equal Pay Act that can be applied to all sectors of the community.
"We’re pleased that the Government is responding to the public mood for change and recognising that the principle of equal pay should be the norm in 21st century workplaces," says Erin Polaczuk, PSA National Secretary.
"There’s been four decades of inaction since the Equal Pay Act became law in 1972 and women workers deserve fair and equal pay."
"In the public service women’s average earnings are 14% less than men’s. The PSA estimates these women are being short-changed to the tune of $295 million, says Erin Polaczuk. "Unequal pay represents a huge loss of earnings over a woman’s working life."
"The unions will be campaigning hard over the next year to ensure equal pay remains high on the political agenda and discussions are not used as delaying tactics."
