Candidate for the Ban 1080 Party in East Coast Bays (2014) calls for the party to be made redundant!
The arrest of the businessman suspected of threatening to contaminate baby milk powder with 1080 poison was welcome news
to everyone and it is a relief to learn that police believe he has acted alone.
However this arrest doesn't relieve the terror that families up and down the country feel every time DOC puts up their
signs warning of yet another aerial drop of 1080 in their backyards.
Lulu's family still have horrible nightmares about her horrendous death on 23rd September, after the three young
children witnessed her excruciating pain and demented behaviour after ingesting a possum poisoned by the 1080 drops in
part of Auckland's water catchment in the Hunuas.
It is ironic that when Penelope Young and her children went to get justice for Lulu at the same Manukau Police Station
where the alleged blackmailer was taken, they were turned away and told their complaint, along with the full autopsy and
toxicology report, was outside their jurisdiction, inferring that those responsible for Lulu's suffering are above the
law.
To make matters worse these same police told them to take their complaint to the people responsible for poisoning her,
being Auckland Council and DOC.
It has been pointed out that this is tantamount to asking a rape victim to take their complaint to the rapist.
If there is any good to come out of this whole despicable baby milk powder saga then it may be that this case will serve
to highlight the dangers of sodium monofluoroacetate, known as 1080 poison, including the risk of terrorism, the damage
it is doing to the whole eco-system and the suffering it inflicts on thousands of animals.
Even the country of origin, the USA, has banned aerial application, where their EPA says it is an extreme hazard to
human health and the environment.
Once the general public become better informed through the issue now being fair and square in the public arena; and as
more and more cases of human suffering emerge: such as the two sisters being dumped on as they picnicked; and the count
of beloved family pets and livestock rises; people will be better able to imagine the enormous and inexcusable
violations of the Animal Welfare Act for which this government appears to believe it is immune from prosecution.
As the Ban 1080 Party candidate for East Coast Bays in the elections last year, it is my hope that this political party
will no longer be needed at the next general election because a concerned and caring public will insist that sodium
monofluoroacetate is no longer dropped indiscriminately from the air, poisoning 700,000 hectares of forest, waterways
and large areas downstream, including to the beaches and into the sea.
The sooner the Ban 1080 Party is made redundant the better!
