Dr Harry Shier to visit New Zealand for National Youth Sector Professional Development Event
Ara Taiohi, national peak body for the youth sector in New Zealand, is delighted to announce that Dr Harry Shier will provide the keynote address. His presence at Ara Taiohi's biennial national wānanga, Building Pathways, will add a
wealth of practical, policy and research experience in child rights and youth participation to the programme. Dr Shier
has worked in diverse settings and contexts, from working on new approaches to community education in Nicaragua, to
facilitating participation training for members of UNCROC in Geneva. He is most well-known for his seminal text
‘Pathways to Participation’.
"We're so excited that Dr Shier will add his voice to Building Pathways. He will join a very strong line-up of thinkers
from Aotearoa, including Dr Elizabeth Kerekere, Shakti, the Christchurch Youth Council, Rainbow Youth and Kate Peirse
O'Byrne," says Anya Satyanand, Executive Officer at Ara Taiohi. "We've created a programme which absolutely captures the
breadth and strength of the youth sector in New Zealand right now, and we're looking forward to sparking some great
debates and ongoing conversations," Satyanand says. The wānanga will offer a unique opportunity for people from right
across the youth sector to come together and find ways to collaborate and 'build healthy relationships', which is the
theme of the 3 days. "Ara Taiohi is keen to create the space for shared projects and a collective sense of direction for
people working in the youth sector- for the benefit of our young people in NZ," says Satyanand.
Dr Harry Shier will replace Dr Pat Bullen who is sadly no longer able to attend.
